Kentish Men and Men of Kent

I've often heard it said that the Men of Kent are from south of the Medway, while the Kentish Men are from north of the Medway. This has always amused me, as the Medway flows pretty much from south–west to north–east. When it reaches the coast it's flowing more or less northwards.

Kent was traditionally divided into East Kent and West Kent, for purposes that included parliamentary constituencies, army recruitment and quarter sessions. Wikipedia suggests that the division arose because the Jutes settled in the east and south of the county shortly after the departure of the Roman armies, early in the 5th century, while the Angles and Saxons came later and settled further west.
